Building a custom home is the longest relationship you will have with a contractor, so it is worth getting the fit right. Our team guides you through every stage — from the first planning conversation, through plans and permitting, to the day you move in.
We take the same approach to a new build that we take to a renovation: clear communication, decisions made in the right order, and one general contractor accountable for the whole thing.

What matters on a custom new home construction project
Site first
Slope, soils, drainage, setbacks, and access decide more about a custom home’s budget than the finish schedule does. We start with what the lot will actually support, then design into it — rather than pricing a plan that the site was never going to accept.
Entitlements and plan check
Coastal lots, hillside overlays, and view-corridor rules add real time to the front end of a San Diego build. Knowing which reviews apply before you commit to a design is the difference between a nine-month approval and a two-year one.
Materials and craftsmanship
From framing and weather barrier through millwork and trim, the work that gets covered up is what determines how the house performs. We hold the same standard on the parts nobody will ever see.
One line of communication
You are introduced to the subcontractors, you know who is on site, and your questions go to a person who can answer them. Clear communication and collaboration are not a bonus on a two-year project — they are the whole thing.
Custom New Home Construction: common questions
How long does it take to build a custom home in San Diego?
Construction itself commonly runs twelve to twenty months depending on size and complexity. The front end — design, engineering, plan check, and any discretionary review — frequently takes as long as the build. Coastal and hillside parcels sit at the long end of that range.
Do you build on coastal lots?
Yes. Sites inside the Coastal Zone typically require a Coastal Development Permit in addition to a building permit, issued through the local jurisdiction under its certified Local Coastal Program, with some sites appealable to the California Coastal Commission. It is a longer path and a well-worn one — the key is planning for it from day one.
Can you build from plans I already have?
Absolutely. Bring an architect’s set and we will price it, flag anything that will draw a correction in plan check, and build it. We also do design-build, where the design and construction sit under one contract — see our design-build page for how that changes the process.
